Lantern pavilion
The project is Craft Space: from tradition to future.
I chose a lantern as my craft theme.
I think that the Chinese traditional lantern has some distinct features. For example,
the light is soft and it has no direct light source.
Based on these features, I created an area with soft light and reusable areas.
I found a kind of lantern named the palace lantern. Palace lanterns are usually made of rice paper with beautiful patterns.
I did a material test to find a material which can replace rice paper. Then, I chose glass and cloth to make this design stronger.
It also remains a traditional feeling with cloth, and cloth can reduce the light coming in though the glass.
After that, I considered the ceiling. I want people to stand in this area to be able to interact with the shadows. So I cut a few shapes randomly with wooden boards and tested their shading in the light, which helped me determine the size of the ceiling pattern
This area is 7 meters long and 4 meters high.
The floor has a light-coloured traditional Chinese design similar to that of the ceiling. The light will allow the shadow to merge with the ground.
Depending on the different theme, the ceiling can be changed
